Additive manufacturing as a disruptive enabler of the Twin Transition

Ambition
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is, in principle, the only viable solution for creating a new generation of green and circular products — lightweight, energy-efficient, and long-lasting — using sustainable materials and next-generation zero-waste processes.
Spoke 6 aims to revolutionize Additive Manufacturing as a key enabling technology for the Twin Transition (green + digital).

Objectives

  • Develop highly customized, sustainable and intelligent products to support the future of AM, through new design approaches capable of managing complexity in an eco-conscious way.
  • Create low-impact products across their entire lifecycle by developing innovative materials specifically engineered for AM.
  • Enable zero-waste, intelligent AM through the development of advanced, sensor-rich production platforms enhanced by AI and big data mining — enabling in-situ monitoring, inline adaptive control, and self-repair features for first-time-right manufacturing.

Main Activities

Full integration of all phases of the Additive Manufacturing process to accelerate Italy’s scientific and industrial leadership in AM on the international stage.

  • Development of new AM-specific design solutions
  • Development of new alloys and materials with reduced lifecycle environmental impact

Design and engineering of new materials and production systems aimed at maximizing sustainability throughout the entire AM value chain.

Introduction of a new generation of sustainable Additive Manufacturing technologies, processes and systems.
