RE-PRINT

Digital technologies and additive manufacturing processes supporting new high-value, low-cost repair methodologies for a circular and sustainable Made in Italy
PROJECT LEAD

Giuseppe Barile

CONCEPT

Starting from the concept of amorphous bonding in thermoreversible composite materials (and beyond), the project aims to develop an innovative, low-cost, user-friendly device to support the design and execution of structural component repairs.
The tool facilitates in-situ repairs of typical Made in Italy products and is based on joining/repair technology (patent application for industrial invention no. 102023000007884 filed by BALTA on 21/04/2023).

CONTEXT

High-value repair in support of a circular and sustainable Made in Italy promotes an economy where products are restored, reused and recycled, reducing waste.
This approach is especially valuable for high-tech industrial sectors but is also widely applicable to traditional industries, supporting lower energy consumption and responsible consumption habits.
The RE-PRINT project introduces additive or hybrid manufacturing technologies to enable even structural repairs using eco-sustainable materials, thus extending product life.

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED RESULTS

RE-PRINT aims to promote the core principles of the circular economy by introducing:

  • Advanced additive manufacturing processes
  • Digital tools to support repair design
  • Thermoreversible structural materials for efficient, high-value repairs

The goal is to extend product lifespan while ensuring low cost and reduced environmental impact.

To achieve this, the project will develop and validate — on a laboratory scale — an integrated system including:

  • An innovative repair method based on additive manufacturing, enabling extended use of structural components through amorphous bonding
  • A digital decision-making tool that simplifies the analysis and definition of the repair strategy, improving product quality
