Circular ECOnomy in the TESSile sector of Sardinia: circular business models and new technology applications
CONCEPT

The project aims to promote the transition of Sardinia’s textile sector towards a circular economy model by developing an innovative and sustainable business system.
Its main goal is to maximize economic and environmental benefits by managing product life cycle costs and implementing circular processes.
Through the active involvement of businesses and stakeholders, the project fosters the definition and dissemination of innovative management practices.
The proposed approach, which is scalable and replicable, contributes to the creation of guidelines that support circular models with measurable impact on economy, society, and sustainability.

CONTEXT

The Sardinian textile sector is largely made up of small enterprises, with 842 companies registered in the Telemaco database (Business Register).
At the municipal level, 164 municipalities (43% of the total) host textile companies, with the highest concentrations in Cagliari (138), Sassari (86), and Olbia (52).
Notably, 17% of municipalities have only one textile company.
Furthermore, 26% of the municipalities (99) are located in Inner Areas (according to SNAI classification), accounting for 39% of total textile companies. Among them:

  • 72 operate in Ultra-peripheral areas
  • 124 in Peripheral areas
  • 133 in Intermediate areas
This rural distribution inevitably influences the business models of the local enterprises, both directly and indirectly.

OBJECTIVES AND EXPECTED RESULTS

Within Spoke 5 – Project 9, the direct involvement of companies in the development of a circular business model offers the opportunity to test and identify effective strategies for networking practices and for adopting circular economy principles.
This approach aims to improve enabling conditions and overcome the barriers that hinder the transition to circular models.
By fostering intentional interaction among economic actors, the project strengthens the local production system through:

  • Shared responsibility
  • Increased attention to sustainability
  • Innovative business models that minimize environmental impact

Within Spoke 7 – Project 10, the project aims to design and conceptualize a circular business model focused on value creation through sustainable management, aligned with the “R-paradigms” of the circular economy: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
This is particularly relevant in today’s socio-economic context, which requires a systemic transition toward sustainability—with positive impacts both economically and environmentally.
