The project aims to develop effective technologies for the treatment and recovery of used cigarette filters, transforming them into a viscous material suitable for use in innovative 3D printing processes.
The initiative will span the entire production and operational chain typical of the furniture and home accessories sector, with the goal of validating not only the extraction techniques but also reuse applications. The final material/product is expected to deliver optimal performance and production reliability for use in various Made in Italy sectors, within the framework of advanced manufacturing.
The project addresses the recovery and reuse of cigarette filters, turning one of the most difficult waste materials to manage globally into a valuable Secondary Raw Material (SRM): Recovered Cellulose Acetate.
The relevance, utility, and originality of the project lie both in its innovative waste treatment method—with over 71 billion used cigarette filters discarded annually in Italy—and in the potential to introduce a new material (SRM) to the market. This material can be used in additive manufacturing across multiple applications, particularly in furniture, home décor, and fashion accessories.
